Shark Heart, A Love Story, Emily Habeck (2023) 🩷🩷🤍🤍🤍 Another, quite unusual, take on man and wife. This time, he’s turning into a great white shark. Creative, unique and fast-paced read. Not exactly my style, but if you like the peculiar, this one’s for you.
Born Round, Frank Bruni (2010) 🩷🩷🩷🩷🤍 Highly accomplished Frank Bruni shares his lifelong battle of the bulge and his Italian American upbringing. Hysterically funny and insightful. If you grew up in an Italian American household in the 20th century or if you have waged your own war on weight (both apply to me) you will love this non-fiction read.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Peter Hedges (1991) 🩷🩷🩷🩷🤍 If you remember the 1993 movie, this book exceeds all expectations. A coming of age story about a young man who struggles between the desire for independence and loyalty to his dysfunctional family. At twenty-four Gilbert has unwillingly become the man of the house, attempting to keep it all together with his disabled brother, teenage sister and ailing mother. He is living a small town life going nowhere fast. Despite the tragic plot, this read is full of laughs and will tug at your every heartstring.
